Questions about Analytics, Attribution & First-Party Data

What's the difference between analytics and just installing Google Analytics?

Installing GA4 gives you raw data. Analytics work means defining what to track (events, conversions, user paths), setting up tag management so tracking is consistent, and building reports that tie marketing activity to leads and revenue. Most SMBs have GA4 installed but can't answer basic questions like which channel brings in the most qualified leads.

Do I need server-side tagging or is regular GTM enough?

Regular browser-based tag management (GTM) is fine for most SMBs. Server-side tagging helps when browser privacy rules are blocking too much data or when you need tighter control over what gets sent to ad platforms. If your conversion tracking works and you're not losing significant data to ad blockers, stick with regular GTM. I'll tell you if server-side makes sense during the audit.

How long before reporting is trustworthy?

Two to four weeks after tracking is fixed and events are firing correctly. That's enough time to collect clean data and spot any remaining issues. If you're switching from Universal Analytics to GA4 or fixing broken tracking, expect one to two months before you have reliable month-over-month comparisons.

What access do you need to set this up?

Admin access to GA4, Google Tag Manager, and any ad platforms you're running (Google Ads, Meta, LinkedIn). If you use a CRM like HubSpot or Salesforce, I'll need access to set up conversion imports or lead tracking. For attribution work, I need to see closed deals or revenue data so I can tie marketing back to actual sales.

What's not included in analytics work?

Running your ad campaigns or optimizing spend. That's performance marketing. On-site A/B testing or conversion fixes. That's CRO. Writing email sequences or CRM automation. That's lifecycle marketing. Analytics work is the measurement layer that tells all those other functions what's working. I set up the tracking and reporting, but I don't execute the campaigns.
