AI engines now answer questions directly, pulling from indexed web content to generate responses. Your content's visibility in those answers—measured as Share of Model (SoM)—determines whether your brand reaches users who never click traditional search results.

Unlike search rankings, which show one domain per position, AI answers cite multiple sources in a single response. SoM tracks your percentage of those citations across a set of queries your audience asks. A low SoM means competitors dominate the AI-generated conversation, even if your organic rankings look solid.

This post covers how to measure SoM, identify why your content underperforms in AI engines, and execute fixes that increase citation frequency.

What Share of Model Measures

SoM is the ratio of times your content appears in AI-generated answers divided by total answer instances across a tracked keyword set. If you monitor 100 queries and your content appears in 15 of those answers, your SoM is 15%.

The metric differs from traditional search visibility in three ways. First, multiple sources appear in a single answer, so you can rank alongside competitors instead of competing for one position. Second, AI engines weight sources by relevance to the specific query, not by domain authority alone. Third, your content must be crawlable and indexable by the AI engine—noindex tags, paywalls, and bot-blocking eliminate you entirely.

SoM matters because users interact with AI answers before (or instead of) clicking search results. A user asking "how to optimize for AI search" in ChatGPT sees 3–5 cited sources. If your site doesn't appear, that user never lands on your domain, regardless of your Google ranking.

Track SoM Using Available Tools

No single free tool measures SoM across all AI engines. Instead, use a combination of manual tracking and third-party platforms to build a baseline.

Manual query testing: Select 20–30 representative queries your audience searches. Run each query in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews (in Google Search). Manually note which sources appear and how often your domain is cited. Repeat weekly or monthly to spot trends. This method is labor-intensive but catches nuances tool-based approaches miss.

Third-party SoM platforms: Services like Semrush, Moz, and Bright Data now offer AI search visibility modules. These tools track SoM across Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Claude for your target keywords. Set up a tracked keyword list (50–200 queries aligned to your business) and monitor monthly. Most platforms show SoM percentage, citation count, and source position within answers.

Google Search Console and AI Overviews: Google Search Console does not yet report AI Overview visibility directly. Monitor your click-through rate (CTR) and impressions for branded and high-intent queries. A sudden CTR drop paired with stable impressions may signal AI Overviews are answering the query without clicks.

Crawl audits: Verify your content is crawlable by AI engines. Check your robots.txt file and meta tags for noindex or nofollow directives. Use the Perplexity search interface to test whether your pages appear in results. If your site is blocked, no SoM tracking matters until you unblock crawling.

Diagnose Why Your SoM Is Low

Low SoM usually stems from one of four root causes. Identify which applies to your situation before fixing.

Your content is not crawlable. If AI engines cannot reach your pages, they cannot cite you. Check for paywalls, login walls, JavaScript-heavy rendering, or bot-blocking rules. Perplexity and Claude have public bot user-agents; verify they are not blocked in your server logs or robots.txt. If your site requires a subscription or login, AI engines see only the teaser content, limiting citation opportunities.

Your content ranks low in traditional search. AI engines favor sources that already rank well in Google. If your page is on page 5 of Google results for a query, it is unlikely to appear in AI answers. Improve your traditional search visibility first (target underserved keywords, add internal links, refresh stale content). As Google rankings improve, AI Visibility often follows.

Your content lacks topical depth or specificity. AI engines prioritize sources that directly answer the query with concrete, well-structured information. A 300-word page that mentions your topic in passing will not compete with a 2,000-word guide that covers edge cases, examples, and nuance. Audit your top target queries and expand content that feels thin or generic.

Your content is buried behind competitor content in search results. If competitors rank positions 1–3 for your target queries, their content is cited first in AI answers. You must either improve your search ranking for those queries or target adjacent, less-competitive keyword variants where you can rank higher and get cited more frequently.

Improve SoM Through Content Optimization

Once you have identified the root cause, execute these fixes to increase your SoM.

Expand content depth for high-intent queries. Identify queries where you rank but do not appear in AI answers. Expand those pages to 2,000+ words, add concrete examples, include a step-by-step breakdown, and address common follow-up questions. AI engines cite sources that feel authoritative and comprehensive. A 1,500-word article beats a 500-word post on the same topic.

Target underserved keyword variants. Instead of competing for broad queries where established competitors dominate, target long-tail variants with lower search volume but less competition. If "how to use Google Analytics" is dominated by Google's own help center, try "how to set up GA4 for e-commerce" or "GA4 custom event tracking for SaaS." You rank higher on these variants, get cited more often, and build SoM incrementally.

Improve traditional search rankings first. SoM follows search ranking. If you are not on page 1 of Google for a query, you are unlikely to appear in AI answers. Use on-page SEO (keyword placement, internal linking, clear heading structure) and off-page signals (backlinks, topical authority) to move from page 2 to page 1. As your Google position improves, AI visibility increases.

Structure content for AI parsing. AI engines parse HTML structure to understand content. Use semantic HTML: proper heading hierarchy (<h2>, <h3>), short paragraphs, and bullet lists for parallel items. Avoid walls of text. AI engines prefer content that is easy to scan and extract. A well-structured page with clear sections ranks higher in AI answers than an unstructured page with the same word count.

Add schema markup for factual claims. Schema markup (like Article, FAQPage, HowTo) helps AI engines understand your content type and extract key information. If you publish how-to guides, use HowTo schema. If you answer common questions, use FAQPage schema. This markup does not guarantee AI citations, but it makes your content easier for AI engines to parse and reference.

Cite original research and primary sources. AI engines favor sources that cite data, studies, or primary research. If you reference a statistic, link to the original source. If you test a tactic, show the methodology and results. Original insights and verified examples make your content more citable than generic advice.

Reality Check: SoM Takes Time

Improving SoM is slower than improving search rankings. AI engines crawl less frequently than Google, and they refresh their training data on a delayed schedule. A content update you publish today may not appear in AI answers for 4–12 weeks.

Additionally, SoM is influenced by factors you cannot control. If an AI engine changes its citation algorithm, your SoM may shift even if your content does not. If a major competitor launches a better resource on your target topic, your SoM may drop. Treat SoM as a lagging indicator, not a real-time metric.

Focus on the controllable inputs: search ranking, content depth, and crawlability. SoM improves as a result of those efforts, not as a direct target.

What to Do Next

Start by selecting 20–30 queries your audience asks. Manually test each in ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. Note which of your pages appear and which do not. This baseline takes 2–3 hours but gives you a clear picture of your current SoM and where to focus first.

Next, audit your crawlability. Verify your robots.txt does not block AI engines, your pages are not marked noindex, and your site is not behind a login wall. If crawlability issues exist, fix those before optimizing content.

Finally, prioritize your top 10 underperforming queries. Expand the content on those pages, improve their search ranking, and re-test in AI engines in 8–12 weeks. Track SoM monthly to measure progress. A full audit of your AI search visibility can accelerate this process and identify opportunities you might miss manually.

FAQs

Does Share of Model affect my Google ranking?

No. SoM and Google ranking are separate metrics. Your Google ranking is determined by Google's algorithm. AI engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity have their own citation logic. Improving one does not automatically improve the other, though both are influenced by content quality and crawlability.

Can I improve SoM without improving my Google ranking?

Rarely. AI engines tend to cite sources that already rank well in Google. If you are on page 5 of Google for a query, your SoM for that query will be low. Focus on improving your search ranking first; SoM typically improves as a result.

How often should I check my SoM?

Monthly is sufficient for most businesses. AI engines crawl and update citations slowly, so weekly checks will not show meaningful change. Monthly tracking lets you spot trends (improving, flat, or declining) without wasting time on frequent manual testing.

Does my site need to be on page 1 of Google to appear in AI answers?

Not always. Page 2 or 3 content can appear in AI answers if it is highly relevant to the query. However, page 1 content is cited more frequently. If you want consistent SoM, aim for page 1 rankings on your target queries.

People Also Ask

What is the difference between SoM and search visibility?

Search visibility measures how often your site appears in search results (one domain per position). SoM measures how often your content is cited in AI-generated answers (multiple sources per answer). SoM is a subset of overall visibility in the AI era.

Can I improve SoM by adding more pages to my site?

Yes, if those pages target queries where you currently have low SoM. More pages mean more citation opportunities. However, thin pages that duplicate existing content will not improve SoM. Focus on filling gaps in your content, not adding volume.

Do AI engines prefer certain domains or brands?

AI engines do not have explicit brand preferences, but they favor sources that rank well in Google and provide high-quality, detailed answers. Established brands often rank higher in Google, so they appear in AI answers more frequently. New brands can compete by targeting underserved keywords and publishing deeper content.

How does noindex affect my SoM?

noindex blocks AI engines from crawling and citing your pages. If your page is marked noindex, it will never appear in AI answers. Remove noindex from pages you want cited in AI engines.

Can I track SoM for my competitors?

Yes. Third-party platforms like Semrush and Moz allow you to track SoM for any domain. Enter your competitors' domains and monitor their SoM across your target keyword list. This helps you identify content gaps and opportunities in your market.

Does internal linking affect SoM?

Indirectly. Internal linking improves your site's crawlability and helps Google understand your content structure, which can improve search ranking. Better search ranking typically leads to higher SoM. However, internal linking does not directly signal to AI engines how to cite you.

What is a good SoM percentage?

It depends on your market and keyword set. If you monitor 100 queries and have 3–5 competitors, a 20–30% SoM is healthy. If you monitor 200 queries and have 10+ competitors, 10–15% may be realistic. Benchmark against your competitors' SoM to set realistic targets.

Does my content need to rank #1 in Google to appear in AI answers?

No. AI engines cite multiple sources, including page 2 and page 3 results. However, page 1 content is cited more frequently. Ranking #1 gives you the highest SoM for that query, but ranking #5 can still earn citations.

How do I know if my SoM is improving?

Track your SoM monthly using manual testing or a third-party platform. Compare your SoM percentage from month to month. If your percentage increases or your citation count grows, your SoM is improving. If it stays flat or declines, your content or search ranking may need adjustment.

Questions I hear a lot

How do you differ from a traditional agency?

You work with me, not a rotating cast. I audit, build, and train your team. Agencies often keep control and charge forever to run what you could own in-house.

What size of marketing budget makes sense for your services?

Honestly, you need enough marketing activity to make fixes worthwhile. Still very early stage? A course or specialist vendor may fit better. Already running a full in-house team? You probably want a full-time CMO, not me part-time.

Do you work with specific industries?

Yes: logistics, real estate, pro services, SaaS, local trades. Places where online leads hit the P&L fast. I skip healthcare and finance; compliance slows the work down.

What does a typical engagement look like?

Engagements start with a two-week audit of analytics, ads, SEO, and CRM. Then a 90-day plan focused on attribution, conversion, and what's leaking spend. Hands-on build and training along the way; at the end your team runs it.

How do I know if I need a digital marketing consultant versus hiring full-time?

If revenue is growing faster than you can hire marketing, fractional support fills the gap. Interim CMO work until you're ready for a full-time exec. Hiring help is available when you get there.

What happens after the engagement ends?

You keep logins, docs, and dashboards. Engagements are built so your team can maintain and troubleshoot. Some clients book a quarterly check-in; that's optional.
