Chapter Glossary
- Impression
- An instance of a URL appearing in search results for a query, regardless of whether the user clicked. Impressions indicate that a page ranks for a term but do not confirm that users engaged with it.
- Click-Through Rate (CTR)
- The proportion of impressions that result in a click. CTR reflects how compelling a search result appears to users relative to other results on the same page.
- Average Position
- A calculated average of a URL's ranking positions across all queries that triggered an impression. Because it averages across many queries and personalisation factors, it can obscure more than it reveals when read in isolation.
- Attribution Model
- A framework that assigns credit for a conversion to one or more touchpoints in a user's journey. Different models, such as last-click, first-click, or data-driven, produce different pictures of which channels contributed to an outcome.
- Branded Search
- Queries that include a brand name or branded term. Branded search reflects existing awareness and behaves differently from non-branded search in terms of intent, conversion rate, and competitive dynamics.
- Non-Branded Search
- Queries that do not include a brand name. Non-branded search captures users who have not yet formed a brand preference and represents the primary acquisition opportunity for most SEO strategies.
- Cohort Analysis
- A method of grouping content or users by a shared characteristic, such as publication date or first visit period, and tracking their performance over time. Cohort analysis reveals patterns that are invisible when pages or users are examined individually.
- Content Decay
- The gradual loss of rankings and traffic that affects even well-optimized pages over time, typically caused by the accumulation of fresher competing content, changes in search intent, or outdated information.
- Algorithm Update
- A change Google makes to the signals or weighting used to rank search results. Algorithm updates can cause sudden or gradual ranking shifts across many pages simultaneously, producing patterns in data that differ from those caused by technical issues or competitive changes.
- Seasonality
- Predictable fluctuations in search demand tied to time of year, events, or recurring cycles. Recognizing seasonal patterns is necessary to distinguish expected traffic variation from performance problems.
- Traffic Quality
- A qualitative assessment of how well the users arriving from a traffic source match the intended audience and how likely they are to take meaningful actions. High volume traffic with poor engagement signals often indicates a mismatch between the content and the intent behind the queries driving it.
- Engagement Rate
- In GA4, the proportion of sessions in which a user actively interacted with a page, as opposed to leaving immediately. Engagement rate replaced bounce rate as the primary session-quality signal in GA4's measurement model.
- Search Console
- Google's tool for observing how a site performs in Google Search. It reports impressions, clicks, CTR, and average position for queries and pages, and surfaces crawl and indexing information. It shows what happens in search before a click.
- GA4 (Google Analytics 4)
- Google's current web analytics platform, which tracks user behavior after a click. GA4 records sessions, engagement, conversions, and revenue, and connects those outcomes to the traffic sources that preceded them.
- Conversion
- A defined action that represents value to a business, such as a purchase, form submission, or sign-up. Measuring conversions by traffic source is what connects SEO activity to business outcomes rather than to traffic volume alone.
