Chapter Glossary

Seed Keyword
A short, broad term that represents the core topic of a subject area. Seed keywords serve as the starting point from which related and more specific search phrases are discovered.
Long-Tail Keyword
A longer, more specific search phrase that typically attracts lower search volume but reflects higher intent and faces less competition than shorter, broader terms.
Short-Tail Keyword
A broad, high-volume search term, usually one to two words, that covers a wide topic and typically faces significant competition from established, high-authority sites.
Keyword Modifier
A word or phrase added to a core term that changes its meaning and signals a more specific intent. Common modifiers include "best," "cheap," "near me," "vs," and "review."
Search Volume
An estimate of how many times a keyword is searched within a given period. High volume indicates popular topics but does not indicate how easy or worthwhile a keyword is to target.
Keyword Difficulty
A measure of how competitive a keyword is, based on the strength of the pages already ranking for it. High difficulty means established content dominates the results.
Search Intent
The underlying goal behind a search query. Intent can be informational (seeking knowledge), navigational (looking for a specific site), commercial (comparing options), or transactional (ready to act).
Buyer Journey Keywords
Search phrases that correspond to different stages of a person's path toward a decision, from early awareness and general questions through to specific comparisons and purchase-ready terms.
Keyword Cannibalization
A situation where multiple pages on the same site target the same or very similar keywords, causing them to compete against each other and dilute the ranking potential of each page.
People Also Ask
A search engine feature that surfaces related questions users commonly ask alongside a primary query. Its presence reflects the high volume of question-phrased searches on a given topic.
Seasonal Keywords
Search terms whose demand rises and falls on a recurring, predictable cycle tied to time of year, events, or cultural patterns.
Primary Keyword
The main search term a piece of content is most directly intended to address. A page is typically structured around one primary keyword.
Secondary Keywords
Related terms and phrases that naturally appear within content addressing a primary keyword. Secondary keywords are not the main focus but are answered as part of covering the topic thoroughly.
Competitive Keyword Analysis
The process of understanding which topics and terms competing sites already rank for, in order to identify where genuine gaps or opportunities exist in the search landscape.
Search Demand
The overall volume and pattern of searches for a topic over time. Demand can be stable, growing, declining, or seasonal depending on the subject.

Questions I hear a lot

How do you differ from a traditional agency?

You work with me, not a rotating cast. I audit, build, and train your team. Agencies often keep control and charge forever to run what you could own in-house.

What size of marketing budget makes sense for your services?

Honestly, you need enough marketing activity to make fixes worthwhile. Still very early stage? A course or specialist vendor may fit better. Already running a full in-house team? You probably want a full-time CMO, not me part-time.

Do you work with specific industries?

Yes: logistics, real estate, pro services, SaaS, local trades. Places where online leads hit the P&L fast. I skip healthcare and finance; compliance slows the work down.

What does a typical engagement look like?

Engagements start with a two-week audit of analytics, ads, SEO, and CRM. Then a 90-day plan focused on attribution, conversion, and what's leaking spend. Hands-on build and training along the way; at the end your team runs it.

How do I know if I need a digital marketing consultant versus hiring full-time?

If revenue is growing faster than you can hire marketing, fractional support fills the gap. Interim CMO work until you're ready for a full-time exec. Hiring help is available when you get there.

What happens after the engagement ends?

You keep logins, docs, and dashboards. Engagements are built so your team can maintain and troubleshoot. Some clients book a quarterly check-in; that's optional.
