Chapter Glossary
- Search
- The process by which a person expresses an information need (typically through a query) and a system attempts to return the most relevant and useful response. Search is both a human behavior and a technological process.
- SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
- The discipline concerned with how content is understood, evaluated, and ranked by search engines. In this course, SEO is treated as a field of understanding rather than a collection of tactics.
- Search mechanics
- The underlying processes by which search engines crawl, index, interpret, and rank content. Understanding search mechanics means understanding why the system behaves the way it does, not just what outputs it produces.
- Mental model
- An internal framework for understanding how a system works. A strong mental model of search allows a person to reason about new situations, interpret changes, and make informed decisions without relying on memorized rules.
- Ranking signal
- Any factor a search engine uses to evaluate the relevance, quality, or trustworthiness of a piece of content relative to a query. Ranking signals are the measurable expressions of what search engines are trying to assess.
- Search intent
- The underlying goal or motivation behind a search query. Search engines attempt to identify intent in order to return results that satisfy what the searcher actually wants, not just what their words literally say.
- Tactics
- Specific, executable actions taken to influence search performance. This course deliberately does not focus on tactics, because tactics without understanding tend to produce fragile, short-lived results.
- Crawlability
- The degree to which a search engine's automated systems can discover, access, and process a piece of content. Crawlability is a prerequisite for a page to be considered for indexing and ranking.
- Indexing
- The process by which a search engine stores and organizes content it has crawled so that the content can be retrieved in response to relevant queries.
- Principles-based understanding
- A way of learning that prioritizes the reasons behind outcomes over the mechanics of execution. In the context of this course, it means understanding why search systems work the way they do rather than memorizing what to do inside them.
